MacBook Basics

This is not a PC. It is much cooler!

Goals and objectives:

1. Three things you should know PC vs. mac
2. Be familiar with icons at the top
3. Be confident about using your dock and making it your own
4. Be organized
5. Find anything


Three Things You Should Know

* Command Q to exit programs - this is not a pc - closing the window does not close the program
* Always install software updates - You can work over the top of this! This will also avoid viruses
* Right Click = "control click" on a Mac

* Software Update - always agree and install now - you can work over the top
* System Preferences - two ways to get there - Set your Desktop and Screen Saver
* Dock - make it your own


View - arrange by - kind, label etc.

* airport - be sure you are connected. Why?
* sound
* battery - Turn off your computer ONLY once a week - just close it the rest of the time.
* date and time
* SPOTLIGHT - Search your computer for anything

Dock

* Add items (shortcuts) to your dock - go into applications and drag the icon to your DOCK - not the desktop or click on the icon when it is open and choose “Keep in dock”
* Remove shortcuts from your dock


Power of "Finder" in the dock

* View buttons - icon, list, columns
* Seeing eye! - quick look at any document without opening applications
* Hard Drive - this is the heart of your computer
* Your Account
* Documents - THIS IS YOUR FILING CABINET - organize it!
o Create files on your desktop and drag docs into it - then drag it into your documents
o or Create files in your documents

Short Cuts
command q = quit
command c = copy
command x = cut
command v = paste
command p = print
command spacebar = spotlight - find anything!
