ArcGIS Online - Esri

Geography is:
  • What's where?
  • Why is it there?
  • So what?
ArcGIS Statewide license is available to all teachers and students in Utah. It is a JavaScript based program that will work on any device, iPad, iPod, iPhone, Android, PC, Mac.
Without even logging in, students can enter data, view tables of data, edit maps. All they have to do is navigate a browser.

You can change symbols, filter for data, compare data and really learn to understand set theory.
Students can
  • Explore
  • Analyze
  • Solve
  • Communicate
Online makes it so easy to do this from home or school and share with parents, other students, groups.

You can search for data already in the system to going to "Search for Layers". Choose data and then select done adding layers. Try population - select the legend button and zoom in and out to see different levels of information: State/County/Tract/BlockGroup.

This layer shows state data

Zoom in and this layer shows block groups data

BLT September 2012

BLT MEETING 9/17/2012

We get good at whata we are trying to do by jumping in, making mistakes and learning from them. Jumping in is fearlessly believing that we can accomplish what we are trying to do and approaching it from the perspective of "I can do this", "this is possible" and "this can create great results".

TED talk - Atul Gawande "How Do We Heal Medicine?" His book: Checklist Manifesto
"We can't know it all. We can't do it all by ourselves.
It's pit crews that we need. " . . . and checklists.

A System needs:
  1. Ability to recognize success and failure. Become interested in data
  2. Devise solutions checklists and pause points
  3. Ability to implement this system
Humility, discipline, team work. Making systems work is THE task of our generation as a whole. In every field knowledge has exploded and we have come to a place where we must have group success. No one person can know or do it all.

Build a check list for Ed Techs.
  • Beginning of year (new teachers,
  • Daily
  • Each term
  • CBT testing
  • PD Classes
  • Endorsement Classes
  • Events - this is what you can expect to see over the year (Report cards, cForum, UCET, CBT,

Do organizations have the best people? No they have the best organization.
  • Treat talent as something that everyone can earn, not that just a few people own.
  • The law of crappy systems trumps the law of crappy people
  • Wisdom is the most crucial talent (growth and learning over time)
  • Encourage people to be noisy and nosy - it promotes wisdom

Thin Client Pilots - Canyons District

In an effort to get computers in the classroom, Canyons District is piloting "Thin Clients". A thin client is simply monitors that run off of one virtual server which acts as the hard drive. One virtual server can handle 180 work stations or "thin Clients". We have installed 4-5 clients per classroom in several grades in Altara and Oakdale Elementary Schools. (Weber District has additional experience with Thin Clients.)

Advantages:

Over time this should equate to a great savings for the District. Not initially.
Cost: Monitor - $160 Thin Client - $480 Server $$$
Usable life extended to 7 to 10 years
Easy to make mass changes to image
Operational cost and support is centralized
Students login using their credentials and save to their Active Directory accounts.
CBT's (Computer Based Testing) can be administered through Thin Clients

Disadvantages:

Thin Clients run only Windows and there are problems running cross platforms with all the Macs in our elementary schools.
Students login using their credentials - not easy for lower grades.
Issues streaming large files across network.
In order to do CBT's we will have to move thin clients from classrooms to a central location for a period of time.

Smart phones/hand held devices usage 600 1st year to 1300 to 3000 (one out of 2 devices will not be owned by the District) $18 to have your device on our network. Looking at 9000 devices - how do you collect $18 from each user? We expect 60% of students will be packing a smart phone or android. Processor on the handheld is better than machines he gave teachers 2 years ago. What are we going to do when it gets here. 4-6 years EVERYONE will have a web device. If they bring it on the property they lose privacy.
Carl: iTunes university - setup teacher account - Using pages to create epub books.
Jordan School District - Bingham High School - one using netbooks, ipads, laptops. Very time intensive for teachers. Wanted to see cost savings of paperless - no texts, no papers, and they want to see which one is working the best.
All students at Kari Sue Special needs have ipads. Doing great differentiation. 39 teachers doing in home instruction.
Going to Google Docs - Google Apps Set up a domain for their school. Go through UEN brokered google so that kids have exclusive rights to their material. If you go directly through Google - material belongs to google. If you use a google doc to write a book, they own half. USE THE AGREEMENT BROCKERED BY UEN.
Davis - Netbooks - Dell does the image $320 Intell tablet PC "Classmate" - they may work a deal. Piloting and want to open a new junior high with one to one device. Training involves not just teaching the teachers how to use the device, but teaching the teachers how to teach using one to one devices. Went with Google apps district wide. Teachers and students have gmail. Docs, calendar, mail, employees chat.
Creating DESK modes. They are assembling resources for teachers Trish - online curriculum (student out for a week - they can get on). Looking at Blackboard to house it.
Alpine Facebook - after about 15 minutes every student was saying - don't open it up - save us from ourselves

Alpine Experience: Smart phones you can get 45 on an access point - netbooks 17-18 - do not know why????
